So what can we do now?

Well quite a lot as it happens. We at Cork Greenmap think that a good working knowledge of your surrounding area can go a long way and aim to help make this knowledge available. We also use maps to get our points across and raise awareness. How well do you know your local area?

Where are the resources that you need to survive?

Shelter? Where do you live? Where are your escape routes if the shit hits the fan? Are you ready to move fast and do you know where you'd be going? Do you know what to do when you get there?

Clean water - wells, springs, rain water? Food? Where would you grow it? Can you remember how to grow your own? I bet your granny can.

Fuel, where do you get it - firewood?

In a crisis we need to know who we can trust and rely on. Who's in your support network? Where do they live? As a group are you prepared for something like this? Is it time to start?

How well are the soil, air and water in your area being looked after? The natural world is our life support system. Is it being nurtured and cared for or plundered in the pursuit of a dangerous illusion? Why not organise together with others to protect and enhance this life support system.

So, get to know your area, get to know people in your area, gather information, get to understand how global processes work locally, make your own maps together and if you want, share them with us. If you want we can help. A map gives an over view and enables you to make informed decisions. Reclaim the power to decide what happens in your area.

In addition to us there are a lot of people working on practical solutions to the challenges outlined in this piece. Here are some based locally and further afield where you can find more suggestions for things to do.
